ABOUT US

What is Economics?  Why should I major in Economics or even study Economics?  Answers to these questions and many more can be found at the Undergraduate Economics web site provided by the American Economic Association. Similarly, the Graduate Economics web site of the American Economic Association supplies a wealth of information about graduate study in Economics and how to prepare for graduate work in Economics.

The LSU Department of Economics offers B.S. degrees in Economics and in International Trade and Finance within the E. J. Ourso College of Business, a B.A. degree in Economics through the College of Arts and Sciences, and  M.S. and Ph.D degrees in Economics.  Our courses provide students with an intellectual challenge and strong analytic training, and, as you will learn at the Undergraduate Economics web site of the American Economic Association,  salaries of our majors are very competitive with those of other business disciplines.   The dedication of our faculty to quality teaching is reflected in the number of college- and university-level teaching awards won by our faculty.  We recognize outstanding Economics majors annually with formal awards, and sponsor the Economics/ITF Club, Students In Free Enterprise, and Omicron Delta Epsilon, a national honor society in Economics.

Research produced by our faculty is published regularly in high-quality economics journals.  The Journal of Macroeconomics, which publishes articles authored by economists from around the world and has an international readership, is edited within the department.  The Division of Economic Development & Forecasting is directed within our department and sponsors the production of the Louisiana Economic Outlook.  The Division has also helped sponsor the Annual Advances in Econometrics Conference in recent years.
