WHAT IS ECONOMICS?
Economics is the study of how people make choices. It examines these choices and provides a way of understanding how to make best use of natural resources, machinery, and work efforts. Through economics, the trade-offs between various goals and the anticipation of the outcomes of events are made more feasible. Majoring in economics provides many career options. Training received in the undergraduate program enables one to analyze complex economic problems, to think critically about a variety of issues, to learn beyond the confines of the classroom, and to be adaptable to the ever-changing demands of the workplace. Employers view these traits as essential.
LSU'S DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS IN THE E. J. OURSO COLLEGE OF BUSINESS
- Provides students with an intellectual challenge and strong analytic training
- Offers bachelor’s degrees in economics and international trade and finance designed to provide the training necessary for careers in government and business where original research is generally not the primary concern.
Financial assistance is available to first-year economics students, and students can choose between a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics or a Bachelor of Science in international trade & finance and tailor their education needs. Additionally, students can participate in various organizations and activities including:
- Omicron Delta Epsilon – This international honor society’s primary objectives are the recognition of scholastic attainment and honoring outstanding achievements in economics. Established in 1915, the organization offers a number of fellowships and presents various awards annually.
- Students in Free Enterprise – Commonly known as SIFE, this global, non-profit organization offers students the opportunity to develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills through learning, practicing, and teaching the principles of free enterprise. LSU’s SIFE team has earned the title of regional champion for five years in a row and, in 2006, was the organization’s Ethics National Champion.
- Economics & ITF Club – The Undergraduate Economics/International Trade and Finance Club serves the needs of students by providing job market information for inquiring employers. The club holds meetings for professional education, occasionally sponsors a "field trip" to visit various businesses on-site, and hosts a social gathering each semester. All interested students are invited to join.
