  • DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT CONCENTRATIONS

As a management major, you currently have a choice among three "options" or "concentrations." You may focus your management studies in the human resource area, the entrepreneurship area, or maintain a more generalist orientation by simply selecting the general management option. Your degree will be designated "Management," regardless of the option you choose. All management majors have certain core management class requirements. Each concentration requires 15 additional hours.

    General Management

Within the general management concentration, nine of the 15 required hours are electives. This gives students the flexibility to either choose from a range of classes for preparation as a true generalist or to "tailor" their management degree to fit career goals. The nine elective hours could include classes to support interests in hospitality management, sports management, entertainment management, healthcare management, etc. See the management department advisor for more information.

    Human Resource Management

The human resource management concentration requires students take nine hours of advanced HR focused classes which can include Employee Selection & Placement, Compensation Administration and Legal Issues in HRM plus six hours of electives. Our HR Concentration requirements are aligned with the Society for Human Resource Management's Curriculum Guidelines. These guidelines were developed by SHRM as the result of an extensive research effort. LSU's program now appears on the SHRM website (http://www.shrm.org/education/hreducation) in the list of universities that align with their curriculum guides. SHRM is the largest professional organization for HR generalists.

    Entrepreneurship

The entrepreneurship concentration requires 15 specific hours of coursework designed to develop entrepreneurial thinking and skills. These courses include Innovation & Creativity, Entrepreneurship, and Small Business Management.
