Who and where is the MKT Undergraduate Advisor?
Dr. Al Burns, 3127 Patrick F. Taylor Hall, 578-8786, alburns@lsu.edu

Can I telephone or email my questions to the MKT Undergraduate Advisor? Yes, but check out the MKT FAQ’s first as he will refer you to them if your question is answered here.

    MKT 3401 QUESTIONS

For MKT 3401, there are prerequisites of ECON and ACCT. Can I take these while I take MKT 3401?
No, they are prerequisites, not co-requisites, so you must complete them before you take MKT 3401.

I took my ECON or ACCT course at another school, but I can‘t register for MKT 3401 because it has not cleared into my LSU profile. How do I get into MKT 3401?
Bring your degree audit and documentation that you took the course(s) to the MKT Undergraduate Advisor, but first make sure you have completed all prerequisites for MKT 3401.

For MKT 3401, I have taken the prerequisites, but I do not have 60 hours, so PAWS says I can’t enroll. What do I do?
If there are seats available in MKT 3401, bring your degree audit to the Undergraduate Advisor.

    CHANGING TO MKT MAJOR QUESTIONS

I am thinking about changing my major to marketing. How do I figure out how many hours and what courses I need to take to graduate?
Use PAWS to indicate that your major is marketing and then check out your degree audit to see what classes transfer into this major and how many/what classes you need to take to graduate.

    MARKETING MAJOR QUESTIONS

What MKT classes are required for marketing majors?
    MKT 3401, MKT 3411, MKT 3413, MKT 4451

Is there a sequence to the required marketing courses?
Yes, MKT 3401 is a prerequisite to MKT 3411 which is a prerequisite to MKT 3413 which is a prerequisite to MKT 4451.

How many marketing electives do I need to take?
You need a minimum of 9 semester hours, or 3 MKT courses in addition to the required MKT courses.

What are Department Approved electives and how many do I need?
You need 6 hours or 2 courses that are “related” to marketing and which enter into your MKT-specific GPA. A Department Approved elective:

    • Can be a MKT course
    • Can be an College of Business Course
    • Can be from the following list (list to come)
    • Can be one that you petition to take

Are there “concentrations” in the MKT major?
No, we dropped all concentrations about 5 years ago.

There is a MKT course that I want to take that is not offered now. When will it be offered?
    Contact the Undergraduate Advisor.

    REGISTRATION QUESTIONS

I need MKT 3401 to graduate this semester, but I can’t get into it. What do I do?
Bring your degree audit and schedule for this semester to the Undergraduate Advisor ASAP.

I can’t get into a required MKT class that I need to take in order to graduate on schedule (MKT majors only). What do I do?
Bring your degree audit and schedule for the semester you are registering for to the Undergraduate Advisor.

All MKT classes I want are full. Will you add more sections later?
No, we include all sections that will be offered in the initial schedule.

I have a MKT class that conflicts with my work or personal schedule. Will the department swap it out for another section?
Use PAWS to accomplish this. If classes are open, you should be able to do the changes. We cannot accommodate students’ personal schedules when classes are full.

My friend and I are in different sections of the same MKT course, and we want to swap. Will the department do this?
Yes, but both of you must come to the Undergraduate advisor at the same time.

I signed up for a MKT course because I wanted the teacher assigned to it. Now, the teacher has changed. Can I get into that teacher’s class now?
Personnel assignments are tentative and finalized after the schedule is published. If you can make the change by use of PAWS, do it. We cannot accommodate your request when classes are full.

    MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS

How do I do a marketing internship?
See the Internship information on the department web site.

I am going to take MKT courses at another institution (US or foreign) and have them transfer back to LSU. What should I do?
Before you enroll elsewhere, fill out a “Transfer of Credit” form from the College of Business Dean’s office. Have the MKT Undergraduate Advisor evaluate and sign the form for any and all MKT courses, even those that you are only considering to ensure that they will transfer back to LSU without a problem.

What is MKT 4477, Independent Study?
This is a course where you and a Marketing Instructor agree on the scope and nature of the work. You work independently under the direction of this Instructor. It is a pass/fail course.

What MKT courses are offered in the summer?
MKT 3401, MKT 3411, & MKT 3410 are offered just about every summer. One elective MKT course may be offered. Check with the Undergraduate Advisor for the coming summer.

What undergraduate MKT courses are offered in the evening?
Typically, only one section MKT 3410 is offered in the evening. There are no other undergraduate courses scheduled in the evenings.

I took Principles of Marketing at another institution, but LSU says it is not accepted for MKT 3401. Is there anything I can do about this?
You can request to take a “proficiency exam” to validate your learning of MKT 3401. Contact the Undergraduate Advisor for details.
