Pre-opening Training

Probably the most intensive and strenuous training a franchisee will ever incur happens during the pre-opening training session. Many franchise systems require two weeks of headquarters' training with additional optional training at existing franchise locations. Some systems may offer as much as 300 hours of pre-opening training. This training includes the main sections of:

  Introduction

  Marketing

  Operations

  Service production

  Management of personnel

  Finance

Most franchisors have found that working with a limited number of franchisees, somewhere between three and twelve, works best and provides the opportunity for one-on-one training. Franchisees have the opportunity to meet with other franchisees, as well as to discuss their expectations, desires, strengths and weaknesses with the trainers, as well as with the peer group franchisees. Part of the essence of the training program is the interaction between franchisees and the opportunity to develop loyalty to the franchising system in creating a sense of belonging for the franchisee.

The training program will generally include a training manual (initially this may be simply the operations manual). This manual will cover the topics pertinent to the franchise business and explain those areas which the franchisee needs to know to successfully run the business. The training program may also include audio or video tapes which provide illustrations of all franchise operations and the operating procedures suggested or required by the franchisor. This manual is therefore important to both the franchisee and the franchisor. This training program provides the essence of the franchise system to the franchisee and how to perform each and every specific task.

Additionally, the training manual and program affords protection for the franchisor in any future dispute or question regarding the appropriateness of the training methods used by the franchisor. Hopefully this will never occur. But some franchisees, after they have left the system, seek redress because of lack of training or support by the franchisor. The training manual provides evidence of appropriate training and the development of sufficient operating skills.
