FRANCHISING EASES THE PATH FOR MANY ENTREPRENEURS
Robert T. Justis, professor and chair of the Rucks Department of Management, and director of the International Franchise Forum, was quoted in a Wall Street Journal article on the benefits of franchising. Justis described the relationship between franchisors and franchisees as "interdependent, and good franchisors realize that." According to Justis, franchises are less likely than independent startups to fail. Also, financial institutions favor lending to franchises rather than new companies. "Bankers working with SBA loan programs want to see a record of success," said Justis.

KATRINA STUNNED POPEYES, WORKER, BUT BOTH REBOUND
A USA Today article recounting Hurricane Katrina’s devastation to Popeye’s and one of the restaurant’s workers, quoted Dr. Bob Justis, an LSU business professor and director of the university’s International Franchise Forum. Justis estimates that only about 50% of New Orleans’ businesses will return to the city under his “best case scenario.” He expects that the area’s permanent population will be significantly smaller. He stated, “Many of these people that have left New Orleans have gone to other states where they’ve found good jobs and good housing, and there’s no desire to come back.”
