The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Research
Foundation has selected Louisiana State University
(LSU) student Jared S. Soileau, CIA, CPA, CISA,
as the recipient of the 2003 Esther R. Sawyer
Scholarship Award.
The Esther R. Sawyer Scholarship Award was founded
in 2000 in memory of Esther R. Sawyer and in recognition
of her contribution to and support of the internal
audit profession. It is presented to an individual
who is entering or enrolled in a graduate program
in internal auditing or business at an IIA-endorsed
internal audit program and has written a manuscript
on a specified topic related to modern internal
auditing. The Sawyer family funds the award through
a generous contribution to The IIA Research Foundation.
Having earned a BS degree in accounting with a
specialization in internal auditing from LSU,
Soileau received his MBA from LSU in May of this
year. His paper, "The Challenges and Effects
of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act on the Internal Audit
Profession," addresses the ways in which
the internal audit profession must change to broaden
its recognition as a cornerstone of effective
corporate governance. Soileau delineates challenges
and makes recommendations for building confidence
through assurance, enhancing reporting systems,
monitoring risk management programs, implementing
control models, recruiting and developing competent
practitioners, and adding value.
The Institute will present Soileau with a plaque
and $5,000 during The IIA’s International
Conference 2003, June 22–25, in Las Vegas.
LSU will also receive a cash award for its IIA-endorsed
program or for the purchase of materials related
to internal auditing. The award memorializes Esther
Sawyer, who was not an internal auditor, but was
the wife of Larry Sawyer, who has long been recognized
as the “father of modern internal auditing.”
She was a gracious ambassador who enjoyed explaining
internal auditing to those she met and editing
manuscripts, speeches, and textbooks on the subject.
She was an avid proponent of internal audit curricula
in colleges and universities and encouraged young
people to consider pursuing a career in internal
auditing.
