The Information Systems and Decision Sciences
department (ISDS) at the LSU E. J. Ourso College
of Business released its annual Louisiana Traffic
Records Data Report in October.
This is the tenth year that LSU has published
the traffic data summary. The study is made possible
through a grant from the Louisiana Department
of Transportation and Development, entitled “Data
Entry and Crash Tabulation 2004.”
According to Helmut Schneider, chair of the ISDS
department at LSU, this year’s report has
improved reporting of alcohol-related crashes,
as well as fatalities, injuries, and property
damage crashes.
The 2004 report indicates the following occurrences:
• 885 fatal crashes
• 991 fatalities
• 85.1 thousand injuries
• 113.4 thousand property-damage-only crashes
Schneider said these crashes resulted in a cost
of $5.6 billion to the citizens of Louisiana,
or approximately $1,948 for every licensed driver
in Louisiana.
The main contributing factors to Louisiana’s
2004 traffic fatalities were alcohol and a low
percentage use of safety belts, Schneider said.
The traffic record data shows the relationship
between each contributing factor and fatalities.
Approximately 46% of traffic fatalities were alcohol
related and 62% of occupants who died in a crash
did not wear a safety belt.
