The Flores MBA Program’s executive MBA class traveled to China on a two-week excursion last October to explore Chinese culture, people and their way of life, and how business is conducted in the nation. The 31-member delegation traveled to Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.
In Beijing, the City of Northern Peace, the Flores EMBAs visited Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, Hutong area, the Great Wall, and enjoyed Peking Duck for dinner. Additionally, the class experienced local life in the Hutong area where they spent a morning visiting with a local family. Flores EMBAs toured a pearl market, a state-run market, and shopped at local bazaars. Business meetings were held with China Construction Bank, Mahon China, a private equity and investment banking firm.
During its visit to Xian, Western Tranquility, the class visited the Terra Cotta Warrior Museum, the City Wall, and toured the Muslim mosque and market. The Flores EMBAs were treated to a traditional Chinese dumpling dinner, visited a state-run jade factory, and shopped in local markets as well.
Shanghai, City on the Sea, afforded Flores EMBAs the opportunity to visit the famed Bund, a Children’s Palace, and the Shanghai Museum. At the Children’s Palace Chinese children ages four to seven years of age learn English and music. At the end of the tour of the Children’s Palace, the Flores EMBAs attended a musical recital where the children played traditional Chinese instruments, piano, and violin. Also in Shanghai, business meetings were held with representatives from Albemarle and DuPont to learn how these companies do business in China and the issues they deal with in this emerging market.
In Hong Kong, the Oriental Pearl, Flores EMBAs took a windshield tour of the various tourist spots on Hong Kong Island. During its stay, the class ventured out to the various tourist and shopping centers spread throughout the area. A business meeting was held with Continental Holding Limited, a Hong Kong Stock Exchange listed company, that designs, manufactures, and markets fine jewelry.
