FINANCE AND ECONOMICS DEPARTMENTS AWARDED FLAGSHIP ASSISTANTSHIPS

January 30, 2008

The Department of Finance and the Department of Economics in LSU’s E. J. Ourso College of Business have each been awarded a permanent graduate assistantship to be assigned to incoming full-time doctoral students.

These assistantships have been made available through a program instituted by LSU Chancellor Sean O’Keefe in which $800,000 of new state appropriations were dedicated to the university’s goal of increasing its number of high-quality graduate students, doctoral students in particular.

“The assistantships will be funded at the approved regular student stipend for each individual program, a number which will be assigned to the award when it is given,” E. J. Ourso College Interim Dean William Lane said. “Assistantships are awarded for a total of four years, assuming the student makes satisfactory progress toward their degree. The term ‘satisfactory progress’ includes, but is not limited to, maintaining semester and cumulative grade point averages of at least 3.0, taking and passing examinations on schedule, and working on the dissertation in a manner that meets the approval of the major professor.”
