LBTC TO CO-HOST NIH SBIR/STTR WORKSHOP IN NEW ORLEANS

March 10, 2008

The Louisiana Business & Technology Center at LSU's E. J. Ourso College of Business and the New Orleans BioInnovation Center will co-host a National Institutes of Health SBIR/STTR workshop Tuesday, March 18, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Tulane Tidewater Building Auditorium, located at 1440 Canal Street.
           
This program is for any Louisiana life sciences or biotechnology company seeking funding for their research, development and commercialization activities. JoAnne Goodnight, SBIR/STTR Program Coordinator for NIH will be the keynote speaker and will offer insight into how to navigate the NIH SBIR process.
           
The Small Business Innovation Research Program is a highly competitive federal government program that encourages small business to explore their technological potential and provides the incentive to profit from its commercialization. By including qualified small businesses in the nation's research and development arena, high-tech innovation is stimulated and the United States gains entrepreneurial spirit as it meets its specific research and development needs.

The LBTC is utilizing the staff and resources of its LSBDC Technology Center and Louisiana Technology Transfer Office to provide logistics and content for this event.
           
The SBIR program was established in 1982 and reauthorized until September 30, 2008. Federal agencies with an extramural research and development budgets over a $100 million are required to set aside 2.5% of their budget for small business to conduct research activities. The LSBDC Technology Center at LSU is a member of the Louisiana Small Business Development Center Network, a statewide network nationally accredited by the Association of Small Business Development Centers, which provides technical assistance in areas of business and marketing planning, financial projections, entrepreneurial training, and loan preparation assistance to Louisiana’s entrepreneurs and small businesses. Each year the LSBDC Network counsels more than 4,000 entrepreneurs and small business owners with nearly 20,000 hours of one-on-one counseling. In addition, the LSBDC Network conducts more than 500 training events statewide each year, reaching more than 10,000 entrepreneurs and small business owners. Since July 2001, the LSBDC has documented assisting entrepreneurs and small business owners by obtaining more than $126.9 million in loans and equity funding. The LSBDC works in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Louisiana Department of Economic Development. The New Orleans BioInnovation Center is a technology business incubator created to foster entrepreneurship within the New Orleans bioscience community.
