Mark Weaver, director of LSU’s Stephenson Entrepreneurship Institute and a professor in the E. J. Ourso College of Business’ Rucks Department of Management, has been given the distinction of Service-Learning Scholar by the Center for Community Engagement, Learning, and Leadership.
This distinction is designed to recognize those who have introduced innovative methods of instructing as well as their work and research aimed at promoting service in education. The award comes with a $2,000 stipend to be used toward furthering the LSU Flagship Agenda through progressive teaching and community stewardship.
“I look forward to working with such innovative faculty members,” said CCELL director Jan Shoemaker. “The number of applications for the Service-Learning Faculty Scholars Program indicates widespread interest in interdisciplinary and collegial course planning.”
During the semester following their selection, Service-Learning Scholars attend a 90-minute workshop in which experts discuss the role of academia in civic improvement and the importance of conveying to students the need for societal responsibility as a complement to institutional learning. They then prepare respective syllabi based on the content of the seminar and create corresponding courses that reinforce that material.
The Stephenson Entrepreneurship Institute, an integral part of LSU’s E. J. Ourso College of Business, was formed to inspire, innovate, integrate and implement new ways of thinking, edu cation, resear ch and outrea ch to positively impa ct students, the regional e conomy, the state of Louisiana and the nation. Various programs help to address the issues and challenges of entrepreneurship, family business and fran chising.
