LSU ISDS PROFESSORS DEVELOPING SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT PROJECT

    January 26, 2010

BATON ROUGE – Two professors from the Department of Information Systems & Decision Sciences in LSU’s E. J. Ourso College of Business are developing a supply chain research project to help government and voluntary organizations make disaster response decisions. Professor Peter Kelle is serving as principle investigator for the project, while ISDS Chair and Associate Dean for Research and Economic Development Helmut Schneider is serving as co-investigator.

According to Kelle, the project aims to identify supply chain management decisions that businesses use successfully in preparation, during and after disasters. Once identified, these practices will be extended to help government and voluntary organizations in disaster response decisions.

“A critical component of disaster response is the resource supply chain,” Kelle said. “We suggest robust supply management strategies like multi-supplier strategies, supplier redundancy, risk sharing contracts and robust information management strategies to make disaster supply chains become more efficient and resilient.”

The project is funded under the Department of Homeland Security, Center of Excellence–Natural Disasters, Coastal Infrastructure and Emergency Management. Program management is being provided by LSU’s Stephenson Disaster Management Institute.

The Department of Information Systems & Decision Sciences at LSU’s E. J. Ourso College of Business combines teaching and research to create a rich learning experience for its students. Relationships with industry and state agencies enable the department to assist organizations with issues related to innovation and technological change, as well as offer enhanced career opportunities for its graduates. Collaborative research efforts of its diverse faculty have resulted in major grants from the National Science Foundation and the state Louisiana. The Stephenson Disaster Management Institute, an integral part of LSU’s E. J. Ourso College of Business, was established to help save the lives of people and animals by continuously improving disaster response management through research and education. Vision and a generous donation by LSU alumni Emmet and Toni Stephenson were responsible for the creation of the institute in 2007. For more information, visit www.sdmi.lsu.edu or call 225-578-0238.
