BATON ROUGE–Students in LSU’s Department of Information Systems & Decision Sciences Assistant Professor Jamison Day’s supply chain management course presented their solutions to a supply chain management case to Al Gahn, chief supply chain officer of Entergy, on April 28, 2010.
Day, with help from E. J. Ourso College of Business Dean Eli Jones, developed the supply chain case from interactions with Gahn. The case challenges students to create proposal documents for Entergy that could be sent to prospective manufacturers and distributors. These proposals are based on the total cost of ownership, calculated by students, for sourcing from the suppliers of various cables used in Entergy’s operations.
“These real-world case studies create a win-win-win,” said Day. “The students really benefit from bringing a bit of reality into the classroom, the company gets a look at some new ideas from the minds of our future professionals and the university loves developing its ties with industry.”
Students on the winning team, which was chosen by Gahn and other supply chain managers from Entergy, each received $500. Members of the winning team were:
- Lina Atiyeh, first-year LSU Flores MBA student
- Monica Haslaur, second-year LSU Flores MBA student
- Ashley Jones, first-year LSU Flores MBA student
- Amanda Veade, first-year LSU Flores MBA Student
“Having the cash prize for the winners is great, but the students are also trying to get the attention of the industry professionals that are assessing their performance,” said Day. “I've really enjoyed seeing the students get competitive about their coursework.”
