    May 17, 2011

BATON ROUGE – LSU Department of Economics Ph.D. graduates Duha Altindag and Colin Cannonier have accepted tenure-track assistant professor positions. Altindag is joining the faculty at Auburn University, while Cannonier is joining Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn.

Department of Economics Chair Robert Newman lauded their accomplishments.

“Duha and Colin were both students of (Ourso Distinguished Chair of Economics) Naci Mocan,” Newman said. “Both have already published peer-reviewed papers and will be tremendous assets to their respective universities.

A native of Turkey, Altindag received his bachelor’s in business administration with honors from Bogazici University in 2006. He earned his master’s in economics from LSU in 2008. During his tenure at LSU, Altindag was selected by his cohort to receive additional funding for his academic achievements. He has been published in the Journal of Labor Research and coauthored “The Impact of Education on Health Knowledge” with Mocan and Cannonier. The latter is forthcoming in The Economics of Education Review.

Cannonier received his bachelor’s in business, economics and social statistics with honors from the University of the West Indies, Jamaica in June 1999. Since then, he has gone on to earn a master’s in development economics and international development from Williams College in 2004, and a master’s in economics from LSU in 2008. In addition to his work with Altindag, Cannonier also coauthored “Foreign Direct Investment and Trade in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union,” which was published in the Journal of Eastern Caribbean Studies in 2007.

The Department of Economics at LSU’s E. J. Ourso College of Business offers courses that provide its undergraduate and graduate students an intellectual challenge and strong analytic training and the tools to address the economic and social problems faced both domestically and internationally. The faculty’s dedication to quality teaching and research is reflected by numerous awards received and peer-reviewed scholarly articles published in high-quality economic journals.
